Abstract
616,626. Measuring forces. HEENAN & FROUDE, Ltd., and WILESMITH, F. T. Sept. 12, 1946, No. 27382. [Class 106 (ii)] An apparatus for measuring a force acting in either of two opposite directions has a single capsule or the like containing a fluid and connected to an indicating and/or recording device, the force being applied to one end or the other of the capsule according to its direction. The capsule is formed by a body 1, Fig. 1, and a piston 1a and is slidable in a fixed housing 2. A downward force applied to a rod 4 is transmitted directly to the piston 1a which, when a member 7 in the body 1 abuts the housing 2, compresses a fluid contained in the space 16 between the piston and body 1 and connected to the indicating and/or recording device by a tube 16b. The rod 4 is connected to an adjustable pin 6 by bridge-pieces 9, 10 secured together by suspension rods, so that an upward force applied to the rod 4 is transmitted through the member 7 to the body 1 which compresses the fluid in the space 16, the piston 1a being held against movement by engaging the upper part of the housing 2. The capsule unit is counterbalanced by a weight 12 carried by a lever 13 which engages the under surface of the member 7. In a modification, Fig. 5, the capsule is formed by flexible diaphragms 18, 18a, each clamped to a fixed housing 2 by a cover 19 and to a central member 20. Pins 4 and 6, one or both of which may be adjustable, engage the central members 20 and are connected together and to the force-applying means by a forked lever 23, 24. When a force is applied in either. direction, one central member 20 is quickly held against movement by its cover 19 and the fluid, connected through a tube 21a to the indicating and/or recording device, is compressed. The forked lever 23, 24 may form the torque arm of a swinging-carcase dynamometer.
