Abstract

558,348. Electromagnetic switches. CONTRACTOR SWITCHGEAR Ltd., and RAYNER, H. Oct. 27, 1942, No. 15049. [Class 38 (v)] An electromagnetic contactor is provided with knock-off means which impart a sudden turning force to the rocking shaft 8a carrying the movable contact should the contacts fail to separate on de-energizing the magnet. In the form shown in Fig. 5 the shaft carrying the armature 2 has jaws 17 which engage with lost motion a portion 16 on the contact carrying shaft 8a. In modifications an auxiliary electromagnet such as 1b, Fig. 14, is energized simultaneously with the de-energization of the main magnet 1a and the movement of the auxiliary armature 2b serves to knock open the main armature 2a and the contact-carrying shaft 6 which is fixed to it should this not open in the normal way under spring or gravity action. In another modification, Fig. 12 (not shown) a pneumatic or hydraulic plunger is operated simultaneously with the de-energization of the contactor magnet and strikes against the armature to knock it into the off position.
