Abstract
557,092. Mixing &c. apparatus. CLYDE PAPER CO., Ltd., and INGLIS, J. June 1, 1942, No. 7379. [Class 86] In a mixing apparatus for paper stock &c. a stirrer 12 is secured to the lower end of a rotary shaft 13 which is supported in bearings 14, 15 and is surrounded by a structure 16, which, with the lower bearing 15, forms a closed casing into which the fluid 11 in the mixing vessel 10 cannot gain access to foul the lower bearing. Water or other liquid for cooling or lubricating purposes can enter the structure through a valved pipe 20, and can overflow through an outlet 22. In a modification, the shaft 13 is enclosed in a tube jointed to the upper and lower bearings to provide a narrow annular water space surrounding the shaft. In another modification, for high speed mixers, in which the matter in the mixing vessel forms itself into a vortex, the stirrer shaft has one stirrer at its lower end and a second spaced from that end so that the lower bearing, which is just above it, will, in the operation of the apparatus, be locked in the vortex cavity.
