Abstract

584,395. Screw and centrifugal pumps. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. July 28, 1944, No. 14439. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1942. [Class 110 (i)] A pump for dealing with liquids containing solid substances is provided with a cutting device which reduces to small dimensions and mixes the solid substances contained in the liquid before these substances are carried by the liquid to the impeller, and a grid disposed between the cutting device and the impeller. The pump may have more than one impeller. A revolving knife 7 having cutting edges 8 is mounted on the impeller shaft 17 and cooperates with a perforated grid 3 and with one or more fixed knives 14 adjustably mounted on ribs 10. The clearance between the cutting edges 8 and the grid 3 can be adjusted by an axial displacement of the impeller shaft. Further cutting edges 9<1> are provided on a fixed ring 9 surrounding the knife 7. The pump may be of the centrifugal type.
