17,935. Halliday, J. July 28. Screw propellers. -The blades of screw propellers are of approximately rectangular section with rounded corners 3<c>, the thrusting face being an untwisted plane. Transverse curved grooves 2 are formed in the face of the blades to prevent radial movement of the water. These grooves are curved eccentrically with reference to the shaft axis, and are deeper at the centre of the blade than at the edges. The grooves are about twice the radial depth of the intervening ridges, and, in some cases, are not carried out to the extreme edges. The blades may be cast with the boss, or separate from it, and may be used in feathering- propellers.
