Abstract

225,076. Mills, M. W., and Bolton, J. Dec. 17, 1923. Aerating; gravity-separation apparatus. - In apparatus comprising an aerating tank and a settling-tank sludge is returned from the bottom of the settling-tank to the aerating tank by means of rotary blades fixed on or arranged within a cone or by means of a revolving screw propeller. Sludge is lifted from the bottom of the conical settling-tank a, Fig. 1, through a pipe c to a casing b by blades on a cone e fixed on a shaft e<1> rotated by friction gear f. The sludge is conveyed from the casing b to the aerating tank by an inclined trough h<1>. The liquid from the aerating tank enters the settling tank through a pipe h<2> and an open-ended deflecting cylinder i. A modification is described in which the blades instead of being attached to a cone are suspended by rods from a. plate secured to the rotating shaft. Fig. 4 shows a further modification applied to an aerating tank as described in Specification 166,385. The sludge is drawn from the settling-tank a through a pipe o by a propeller screw k arranged on the same axis as a rotary cone m which circulates the liquid in the aerating tank n drawing it up a pipe p and distributing it as a film over the surface.
