Abstract

484,840. Gravity-separation apparatus. HARTLEY, E. Feb. 18, 1937, No. 4864. [Class 111] A settling-tank has a central distribution or deflector box 14 and sludge scrapers 25 or scumming means 26 carried and rotated by a central shaft 18 and the liquid is delivered to the box 14 through one or more fixed substantially horizontal pipes 13 with upwardly turned elbows 15. The box may be supported by radial stays 16 connected to a boss 17 on the shaft. Stays 19 support the pipes 13. When a single pipe 13 is used the shaft 18 may pass down through the lower end of the elbow 15, a flange on the shaft serving to support the outer end of the pipe. Alternatively the pipe or pipes 13 may deliver the liquid into a fixed upwardly-directed inner deflecting box, which is supported by a flanged member on the shaft. The shaft may be supported by a bottom toe-step bearing 20, such as described in Specification 458,884, [Group XXXIV], or by an overhead bearing fixed on girders 22. The scumming blade 26, which may have its outer end 26b inclined forwardly is attached to the box 14 and collects scum for discharge to a pocket 27. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement in which the distributing box is formed in two parts, the upper part rotating with the central shaft and the lower part being fixed.
