Abstract

556,353. Litters. WHITFIELDS BEDSTEADS, Ltd., and ADAMS, E. Aug. 11, 1942, No. 11212. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Groups XIV and XXV] A stretcher having a number of adjustable sections a, b, c, is provided with a hinged stay combined with a latch for retaining an end section in adjusted position and also automatically lock the section when it is brought into a horizontal position. The stay e is hinged to the end section a and passes through a slotted bracket f secured to the frame a<SP>1</SP>. A rotatable red g controlled by a spring j is adapted to enter into one of a series of holes or notches in the stay e and the bracket f is provided with a socket k through which the rod g passes and which has a cross slot in its face adapted to be engaged by the pin l on the rod g when the rod g enters one of the stay holes. Rotation and withdrawal of the rod g prevents the latter engaging the holes since the pin l will then bear against the face of the sockets. At the hinged end of the stay e the latter is thickened by a pin e<SP>1</SP> the leading edge of which is wedge-shaped and is so adapted to force back the rod g when the end section a is approaching the horizontal the rod g being pressed forward again by the spring j when the end of the rod registers with the last hole of the stay so automatically locking the end section a in the horizontal position.
