Application February 17, 1947, Serial No. 729,165
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in beds, and more particularly to the provision of means for quickly and conveniently converting twin beds into a double bed.
In hotels, apartments, and the like, it is often desired to convert twin beds into a single double bed, and vice versa, to provide twin beds in a room instead of a double bed.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide means whereby two twin beds can be quickly shoved into juxtaposition to provide a double bed, each twin bed being a separate and complete bed in itself, ordinarily.
A further object is to provide a track for rollers carried by twin beds to facilitate moving the beds together to form a double bed.
A further object is to provide a simple attachment which can be conveniently applied to twin beds so that the beds can be quickly moved together to form a double bed.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of twin bed embodying the invention, moved to form a double bed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the twin beds separated.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a track used in the device.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig 5 is a front view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, in Fig. 1 are shown two twin beds l and 2 which have been moved together to form a double bed. Bed 1 has a back board 3 and bed 2 has a back board 4, which carries a pin 5 adapted to be engaged by a latch 6 on board 3 to hold the beds together. Each of the beds is provided with a pair of floor engaging leg 14, which are adapted to engage the floor of a room, Fig. 5, and support the front ends of the beds.
A board I is attached to the wall back of the beds, and attached to the board 1 is a track 8 for rollers 9 and I mounted on a shaft II, to which is connected a rod 12, projecting from a plate l3, mounted by means of screws or the like on back board 4, for example; it being understood 2 that a similar structure is associated with back board 3.
In operation, when it is desired to form a double bed, it is only necessary to roll the two twin beds I and 2 in juxtaposition to each other, and latch them together by means of the pin 5 and latch 6, the latter being the form of a hook or the like.
It will be seen that there has been provided a simple and effective arrangement and structure for forming a double bed from two twin beds. This device is of obviously considerable value to hotels, and transient housing establishments during conventions, holiday periods and the like when accommodations must be prepared hurriedly and efficiently.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention, of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
In combination, a support attached to the wall of a room, a channelled-shaped track attached to said support substantially parallel to the floor of said room, a pair of twin beds having a pair of legs at the front ends thereof resting upon the said floor, a back board attached to the rear of each said bed, a plurality of rods attached to each said back board substantially normal thereto and extending into said track, a shaft on each said rod normal thereto, rollers in said track and rotatably mounted on each end of each said shaft and overhanging guiding means on said track for retaining said rollers within said track.
