[Class 2 (ii)] The extensibility of artificial yarns, foils, and similar articles having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose is improved by treating them with cyclopentanone or a methyl cyclopentanone and allowing them to shrink. The process may be applied to yarns or cords made of cellulose acetate, propionate, or butyrate, particularly to yarns which have been stretched so as to increase their tenacity. The cyclopentanone may be used in solution in liquid paraffin hydrocarbons, e.g. petrol, ligroin, and kerosene, or in ethers such as diethyl ether. The treatment may be effected in the absence of water or in the presence of small controlled amounts of water which greatly increases the shrinking action of the reagent. The treatment may be effected at room temperature or elevated temperature. The materials may subsequently be subjected to saponification treatment and may be converted to regenerated cellulose materials. In an example, a cellulose acetate yarn which has been stretched in wet steam is treated in hank form with a solution of cyclopentanone in petrol at 25‹C. for 30 minutes. It is washed in ether, scoured with dilute soap solution, washed, and dried.
