Abstract
Textile materials comprising fibres having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose are subjected to the shrinking action of diethyl ketone. The extensibility of the fibres is increased. Staple fibres, continuous filaments, yarns, or fabrics, may be treated. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, aceto-stearate, or other ester, or ethyl or benzyl cellulose or other cellulose ether. Stretched or unstretched yarns may be treated, particularly yarns of cellulose acetate which have been stretched in steam. The diethyl ketone may be used alone or in a mixture with another shrinking agent, e.g. methylene chloride. The treatment may be carried out at 60-100 DEG C., the lower temperatures being more suitable for unstretched or lightly stretched materials, and temperatures above 80 DEG C. being preferred for yarns which have been stretched by seven or more times their original length. The treatment may reduce the lustre of unstretched and lightly stretched yarns. After the treatment, the materials may be cooled to room temperature and then freed from the diethyl ketone by washing with petrol.
