Abstract

A process of treating artificial fibre yarns, e.g. viscose, cuprammonium, cellulose acetate or polyvinyl yarns, particularly high twist yarns, to overcome snarling in knitting &c. operations, comprises applying to the yarn, prior to twisting, an aqueous emulsion containing a hydrogenated vegetable, animal or marine fatty oil, having a melting point above 30 DEG C., drying and thereafter twisting the yarn with or without the step of setting the twist by heat. The emulsion may contain between 2-30 per cent of the hydrogenated oil and the twist, e.g. 50 turns per inch, may be such that kinking would be caused in the untreated yarn. Examples of oils, which, when hydrogenated are stated to be suitable are: beef or mutton tallow, lard, castor, olive, palm, peanut, soya bean, cod, pilchard and train. Emulsifying agents, such as the monoglycerides, may be used to stabilise the emulsion and paraffin, gelatine or starch may be added for lubrication &c. purposes. The emulsion may be applied by soaking, spraying, rollers, &c. In an example, an emulsion was prepared from 7.3 parts of hydrogenated cottonseed oil, 3.6 parts of sulphated cottonseed oil and 0.5 parts of gelatine in 88.6 parts of water, and 50 denier-36 filament cuprammonium rayon skeins were soaked therein at 130 DEG F. for 20 minutes. The skeins were then centrifuged and dried at 140 DEG F. for 5 hours. It was found that the skeins had an increased weight 8.3 per cent based on their original weight. The yarn was then thrown and twisted to 50 turns per inch after which it was steamed for 15 minutes at 140 DEG F. wet bulb and 134 DEG F. dry bulb. U.S.A. Specification 2,168,479 is referred to.
