Abstract

A process for treating artificial fibre yarns, e.g. viscose, cuprammonium, cellulose acetate or polyvinyl yarns, particularly high twist yarns, to overcome snarling in knitting &c. operations, comprises applying to the yarn, prior to knitting, a hydrogenated fatty oil of melting point above 30 DEG C. in the molten state or in solution, and thereafter twisting the yarn. The weight of oil distributed in the fibre may be from 2-30 per cent of the dry untreated yarn. The twist imparted to the yarn, which may be sufficient to cause kinking in the untreated yarn, may be set by means of heat. Examples of the oils which, when hydrogenated, may be used are: beef or mutton tallow; lard; wool, bone or horse fat; castor; soyabean; palm; cod; pilchard. The oil may be applied by immersing the yarn in a solution thereof, any of the usual solvents, e.g. Stoddards, xylene, &c. being used, following which it is centrifuged and then twisted up to say 60 turns per inch. The twist is then preferably set, as by treatment in a steam cabinet. In an example, 400 parts of hydrogenated tallow and 200 parts of xylene were melted together at 150 DEG F. and 50 denier 36 filament cuprammonium rayon skeins were soaked therein for 20 mins. After removal, they were centrifuged down to a take-up of 20 per cent and after storing for a week in air tight cans were thrown and twisted to 50 turns per inch. The twisted yarn was then steamed at 140 DEG F. wet bulb, 134 DEG F. dry bulb for 15 minutes and was stated to have a good "hand" and to be free from snarling.
