Abstract

333,949. British Gelanese, Ltd. March 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Divided on 308,173. Moistening yarns in spinning and twisting machines.-Di- or poly-hydric alcohols, or compounds having a di- or poly-hydric alcohol base and boiling at above 100‹ C. are used for the lubricating or softening of textile filaments, threads, yarns, or the like. The process is particularly suitable for natural silk or artificial silk filaments, but may also be used for other materials such as wool, flax, and cotton. Examples of substances that may be used are ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, and ethers of di- or poly-hydric alcohols such as mono-ethyl ether of ethylene or di-ethylene glycol, di-ethyl ether of di-ethylene glycol, and mixtures of these substances. The application may be by wicks or pads and may take place during winding or spinning operations and during the manufacture of cellulose acetate yarn, the lubricant being applied to the filaments as they leave the spinning cell or metier and prior to winding or twisting. Specification 308,173 is referred to.
