Abstract
Filaments, foils, and the like of organic derivatives of cellulose are stretched in steam or hot water at a temperature of at least 138 DEG C., e.g. 140 or 145 DEG C. Stretches of the order of 50 to 200 times the original length of the filaments and threads may be obtained. When steam is employed the pressure is preferably such as to keep it just wet, but dry steam may be used. In an example, cellulose acetate yarn is stretched to 90 times its original length in an apparatus such as is shown in Specification 443,707, the steam chamber containing wet steam at 142 DEG C., and the length of the chamber being 18 inches. In another example the length of the chamber is 9 inches, the temperature of the wet steam is 144 DEG C., and the yarn is stretched to 170 times its original length. In a third example, cellulose acetate yarn is stretched in hot water in an apparatus similar to that described in Specification 438,587, wherein the length of the hot water chamber is 9 inches and the temperature is 150 DEG C. The yarn is stretched to 60 to 80 times its original length. The products may be subjected to shrinkage as is described in Specification 389,823, or to saponification. Specifications 438,584, 438,585, 438,586, 438,655, and 438,656 also are referred to.
