Abstract

A process for the treatment of artificial filaments, threads ribbons and similar materials having a basis of organic derivatives of cellulose comprises subjecting them in the absence of tension sufficient to stretch them to treatment with neutral organic shrinking agents particularly latent solvents such as methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform tetrachlorethane or ethyl acetate at a temperature of 12 DEG C. or less. Suitable diluents may be added to the shrinking agents, preferably diluents with boiling points of 80 DEG C. or less. Examples are benzene, hexahydrobenzene, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl chloride, dichlorethylene, or ethyl-isopropyl ether or di-isopropyl ether. The yarns may be treated in hank form or during travel from one point to another, the shrinking agent being applied either in a bath or as a vapour. The degree of shrinkage may be controlled by means of positively driven rollers. The shrinking may be effected continuously with production of the yarns or with stretching or saponification processes. It is particularly valuable for yarns which have been stretched, e.g. in presence of steam or hot water as in Specifications 438,584, 438,585, 438,586, 438,587, 438,655, and 438,656. Cellulose ester yarns treated according to the present invention may be saponified, e.g. as described in Specifications 402,104, 402,105, 402,106, 417,220, 428,224, 429,103, 430,349, 430,350, 430,351, 432,027, and 432,028. Cellulose acetate yarns in warp form may be stretched in the presence of steam, shrunk according to the invention and then saponified. Examples are given employing as shrinking agents mixtures of 60--70 per cent methylene chloride and 40--30 per cent ethyl chloride at 6--10 DEG C., and mixtures of 75--80 per cent methylene chloride and 25--20 per cent petroleum ether at 10--12 DEG C. In each case rollers are used and a shrinkage of 10--12 or 15 per cent obtained. Specification 389,823 also is referred to.
