Abstract

Artificial filaments, yarns, films, and the like obtained by the saponification, esterification, or etherification of formed artificial filaments, yarns, films and the like having a basis of a cellulose derivative, or by the esterification or etherification of natural or regenerated cellulose materials, are subjected to a stretching operation in the presence of steam or hot water at a temperature above 100 DEG C., e.g. at 120 or 150 DEG C. or more. Examples describe the stretching of (1) cellulose acetate yarn of 56--58 per cent acetyl content made by acetylating commercial cellulose acetate yarns, (2) cellulose acetate yarn saponified to an acetyl content of 45 to 48 per cent, and (3) yarn obtained by the acetylation of regenerated yarn until it contains an acetyl content of 1,5 to 2 groups per cellulose unit.
