Abstract

Lacquers are prepared from primary mixed cellulose esters containing both acetyl radicles and one or more radicles derived from fatty acids containing 3-5 carbon atoms, which esters have been made by a basic process. The esters in question have a high resistance to water, examples being cellulose acetate--propionate and acetate-butyrate; for use as a lacquer or impregnating composition the latter is dissolved in acetone.ALSO:Cellulose carboxylates, processes for making filaments and films from.-Primary mixed cellulose esters containing both acetyl radicles and one or more radicles derived from fatty acids containing 3-5 carbon atoms, which esters have been made by a basic process such as that of Specification 291,360, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are used for working up into plastic masses, and for the manufacture of films for photographic and other purposes, artificial threads, lacquers, coatings, impregnating materials, electric insulating materials and safety or reinforced glass. The esters in question are distinguished by their resistance to water. Filling materials and other additions may be incorporated, in the compositions, which may also contain other cellulose derivatives. In one example, a cellulose acetate-propionate is made by heating to 110-120 DEG C. dry cotton or paper pulp, acetyl chloride, propionyl chloride, pyridine bases and chlorobenzene; the ester, without being subjected to hydrolysis, is dissolved in alcohol-benzene-acetone, and the solution dry spun into threads which have a high wet tenuity and are suitable for covering electric cables. In a second example, a cellulose acetate-butyrate is made by a similar process, is dissolved in acetone, and the solution used as a lacquer or impregnating solution or worked up into films of good stability and resistance to hot mineral oils, and therefore suitable for electric insulation; or a solution of the ester in alcohol-benzene-acetone and to which diethylphthalate has been added, may be used for making films for photographic purposes.ALSO:For the manufacture of plastic masses there is used primary mixed cellulose esters containing both methyl radicles and one or more radicles derived from fatty acids containing 3-5 carbon atoms, which esters have been made by a basic process. The esters in question are distinguished by their resistance to water, suitable examples being cellulose acetate-propionate and acetate-butyrate. Filling materials and other additions may be incorporated in the compositions, which may also contain other cellulose derivatives.
