Abstract

An aryl phosphate, such as triphenyl, tricresyl, monocresyl, diphenyl, or trinaphthyl phosphate, is used as a plasticizer for the higher cellulose esters such as stearate, laurate, oleate, or palmitate, or for cellulose phenyl acetate or crotonate. The material may also include other cellulose esters, either simple or mixed, cellulose ethers, fats, waxes, oils, gums, resins, &c. A solution for making films consists of 100 parts cellulose stearate in 300-500 parts of benzene to which is added 10-50 parts triphenyl phosphate. A solution for coating or for making filaments by a dry or precipitation process consists of 100 parts cellulose oleate in 300-500 parts acetone to which is added 10-50 parts triphenyl phosphate. The composition may be used in lacquers or varnishes or in a moulding powder. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of an aryl phosphate as a plasticizer for cellulose esters containing acyl groups of more than three carbon atoms. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:An aryl phosphate, such as triphenyl, tricresyl, monocresyl, diphenyl, or trinaphthyl phosphate, is used as a plasticizer for the higher cellulose esters such as stearate, laurate, oleate, or palmitate, or for cellulose phenyl acetate or crotonate.
