Abstract

Yarn having a basis of an organic ester of cellulose is simultaneously stretched by at least 40 per cent of its original length by passing it through steam or hot water, and given a low twist during its travel between feed and take-up devices. The amount of twist imparted to the yarn may amount to about 20 turns per inch, and the stretch from 40 per cent to 100 per cent or more. For example, a cellulose acetate yarn of about 150 denier is drawn from a bobbin rotating at 11,000 revolutions per minute through a chamber 3 inches in length containing wet steam at 30 lbs. gauge, and taken up at a speed of 140 meters per minute. The product has a denier of 100.
