Abstract

<PICT:0371910/IV/1> Threads of continuous filaments are stretched beyond their elastic limit at intervals along their length, the remaining portions being either unstretched or stretched to a different extent, the whole being subsequently subjected to a shrinking action. The threads may be passed round a pair of rollers, the second one of which rotates at a higher peripheral speed to cause stretching, means being provided to vary intermittently the length of path followed by the thread between the rollers, so as to render the stretching intermittent. The means for varying the length of path may comprise reciprocating, oscillating or rotating means actuated at any desired regular or irregular intervals. The threads may contain different kinds of natural or artificial continuous filaments of like or different deniers. The strained threads may be doubled with other strained or unstrained threads, one or more of the components having a high degree of twist, or two intermittently strained threads may be doubled and bound together with a low twist thread to produce a composite thread suitable for the production of cr<\>zepe effects in a single box loom. The threads may be sized during stretching or otherwise, e.g. as described in Specifications 348,589, 352,451, and 357,169, and subsequently scoured or shrunk; in carrying out the shrinking, the treatments described in Specifications 351,999, 352,000, 356,233, and 357,084 may be resorted to, to effect a swelling of the materials of the threads so as to improve the contraction obtainable. Thread 5 from the spinning cell 6 passes round a roller 7 and round another roller 8 rotating with a higher peripheral speed, thence to a cap-spinning device 9. Intermittent stretching is effected by a vertically moving rod 11 actuated by a cam 12, which deflects the thread from the straight path. Such an intermittently stretched thread may be doubled with an unstretched thread, e.g. by passing a separate thread 14 from the spinning cell 6 direct to the second roller 8 and cap-spinning device 9. The unstretched thread may be delivered from a bobbin, or the whole operation may be effected during bobbin to bobbin winding. Specifications 321,762, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 346,354, and 370,040 are also referred to.
