Abstract
488,653. Crepe threads and fabrics; embossing. DICKIE, W. A., and FINLAYSON, D. Dec. 9, 1936, No. 33835. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group XVI] Fabrics containing highly twisted threads of cellulose esters or ethers (other than cellulose acetate) which have been produced by a process in which at least the last part of the high twist is inserted while the threads are in a softened condition, or containing highly twisted cellulose acetate threads which have been produced by a process in which at least the last part of the high twist is inserted while the threads are in a softened condition due to the influence of an agency other than steam or hot water alone, are embossed so as to bring about displacement of the threads prior to subjecting the fabrics to the action of a crÛpeing liquid. The highly twisted threads may be obtained, for example, according to the processes described in Specifications 438,589, 438,591, 438,654, and 441,573. A number of suitable softening agents are specified. Twisting may take place on a device in which the thread is drawn off over the end of a rotating package, or a ring twister may be used. The floating ring device described in Specification 304,806, [Class 120 (iii)], may be used to restrict ballooning of the thread and the tendency of the twist to run back to the package. The total twist applied is in general less than is necessary to give a satisfactory crepe effect without the embossing treatment, for example, a twist of 40-65 turns per inch is sufficient when embossing is employed, against 70-80 without the embossing step. The surfaces of the embossing rollers may have the appearance of a crepe fabric, or they may consist of small geometrical figures or close patterns of continuous lines. The fabric may be softened, prior to the embossing operation with solvents or softener, a number of which are specified.
