Abstract

437,019. Twisting artificial threads. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London.- (Celanese Corporation of America; 180, Madison Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 20, 1934, Nos. 2070 and 16242. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] Highly twisted crÛpe threads of cellulose acetate filaments are obtained by crÛpe twisting the threads in a single stage and during insertion of the twist steaming the threads under conditions such that moisture is present. During the twist the threads may be passed through a closed chamber maintained full of steam under conditions such that moisture is present. The threads produced are smooth, and cylindrical and extremely closely packed so that the apparent specific gravity of the thread may be more than 85 per cent of the actual specific gravity of the filaments. A minimum twist of 70 turns per inch for a crÛpe thread of 165 deniers, and 85 turns for a crepe thread of 115 deniers may be given. The threads are stretched during the twisting treatment. The threads may be of continuous or discontinuous filaments. The filaments may contain water-insoluble compounds such as pigments and loading material. Sizes such as casein, egg-albumin, and linseed oil, may be applied to the threads at any stage of the manufacture. The thread may be drawn off over the end of a rotating package through a guide in line with the axis of rotation and passed on its way to a bobbin through steam under conditions such that moisture is present. A ring-twisting device may be used. Flyers, floating-rings, or other devices may be used to restrict the amount of ballooning of the thread or the tendency of the twist to run back to the package. Steam may be passed through a chamber situated vertically over one or more twisting spindles, and provided with inlet and outlet holes for the threads. The presence of moisture is assured by supplying wet steam or arranging for condensation, or wetting the thread with water The steam may be at atmospheric or elevated pressure. The resulting crÛpe threads may be associated with low or highly twisted threads of cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose, natural silk or other material in the production of fabrics which are subsequently scoured. Salts or sugars may be incorporated in the scouring baths to minimize the delustring effect. Specifications 304,806, [Class 120 (ii)], 348,589, 424,683, 424,752, 424,830, and 424,879 are referred to.
