Abstract

Yarns of a thermoplastic organic derivative of cellulose are subjected to stretching in their unsoftened state by an amount up to 80 per cent of their extensibility under the prevailing conditions, and are then subjected to further stretching while in a softened condition. The first stretching may be carried out with the yarn in the dry or wet condition and may be such as to produce a permanent elongation of 2-25 per cent of the original length. The further stretching may be carried out in the presence of saturated or wet steam or hot water under pressure at temperatures above 100 DEG C. The further stretching may be such as to produce an elongation of 5-20 or more times the original length. The two stages of stretching may be carried out in sequence on the travelling yarn. The yarn may be fed through a pair of rollers outside the steam treatment chamber, then through rollers located in an end chamber adjoining the steam chamber, and then through the steam chamber to a further pair of stretching rollers. Alternatively, the yarn may be fed through two sets of rollers outside the steam treatment chamber, and then through an injector device into the steam chamber. Prior to or during the first stretching the yarn may be passed through a trough containing water at room temperature or at a raised temperature, e.g. up to 75 DEG C., provided that it is not hot enough to soften the yarn. The process may be applied to single yarns, or to a group of yarns in warp formation, or to large bundles of yarns, e.g. those having initial total denier above 100,000, which are subsequently to be converted into stable fibre. Staple fibre yarns may be subjected to the treatment. The yarns may be of cellulose acetate of various viscosity characteristics, or of cellulose propionate, butyrate, or aceto-butyrate, or of ethyl cellulose or of other cellulose ester or ether. Specifications 438,584, 438,585, 438,586, 438,587, 438,655, 438,656, 443,707, 443,773, 488,794, 526,157 and 558,958 are referred to. The Provisional Specification comprises also the stretching of polyvinyl, polyacrylic and other thermoplastic yarns.
