555,743. Automatic control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 16, 1942, No. 3420. Convention date, March 15, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)'] [Also in Group XXXVII] A traction motor 12 with a series field 26 is supplied during motoring from a generator 10 driven by a diesel engine. During braking the motor armature is connected in a loop with a braking resistor 13 and a current responsive relay 52 and its field 26 is excited by the generator 10 running at idling speed. If the braking current is slightly above normal, relay 52 lifts partly so as to include resistor 71, 72 in circuit with the field 36 of the generator. If the braking current is excessive, due to high vehicle speed, or the institution of braking immediately after running so that the Diesel engine has not dropped to its idling speed the relay 52 lifts fully and reverses the field 36 by connecting it across a bridge of resistors 71, 74, 72, 73.
