Abstract

1,210,116. Control of A.C. motors in rail traction systems. ETABS BRISSONNEAU & LOTZ. 30 Aug., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 41459/68. Headings H2H and H2J. An A.C. driving system for a rail traction engine equipped with gas turbines 1, 2 driving an alternator 3 which supplies asynchronous traction motors 6 located on certain of the axles of the engine is provided with auxiliary means to start the gas turbines which means comprises an auxiliary generator 9 driven by a prime mover 8, the generator 9 producing a voltage at constant frequency which is fed to the traction motors 6 by way of a cyclic frequency converter 12. When starting, a control unit 5 is effective to switch the converter 12 on so that the output of the auxiliary generator 9 is fed through the frequency converter 12 to the motors 6 thus causing these motors to rotate. At the same time the alternator 3 will also function as a motor to rotate the turbines 1, 2 but no fuel is injected at this stage. A signal 13, responsive to the speed of the motors 6 is fed into the converter 12 such that the output frequency of the converter gradually increases, thus increasing the speed of the motors 6 and of the turbines 1, 2. At a given speed the turbines become effective to drive the alternator 3 to supply the traction motors 6 at which point signals dependent upon the alternator output voltage and current fed to the control unit 5 are effective to cause the unit 5 to switch off the converter 12 so disconnecting the starting generator 9 from the system. A resistor 15 is provided to supply non-regenerative braking for the engine and the generator 9 may be arranged to supply the auxiliary services on the engine by a supply lead 16.
