Abstract

1464086 Propulsion system for a vehicle FIAT SpA 15 April 1975 [19 April 1974] 15443/75 Heading H2H A propulsion system for a vehicle comprises an electric motor M driving via a transmission T one or more wheels R of the vehicle, a turbine TU, an alternator A driven by the turbine to supply current to the motor M, and a battery B connected by means of a first supply line 10 to the motor M, wherein means 26 are provided sensitive to the current in the line 10 to supply a signal along line 28 to a comparator 30 which is also supplied with a reference signal S, a starter unit 40 for the turbine TU controlled by the output 32 from the comparator 30 to start the turbine when the current drawn along the line 10 from the battery exceeds a value determined by the signal S, and a control unit comprising a power sensor 42 and a controller 44 to control the alternator such that it delivers a substantially constant power to a second motor supply line 12 connected to the line 10 at 14. The output from control 44 controls the excitation circuit 46 of the alternator A. The system may additionally have a device 34 also operable to start the turbine TU and receiving information as indicated relating to current I in line 10, battery terminal voltage V B , battery temperature P and battery gas pressure G. The current to the motor M is regulated at RE under control of device 16 which is responsive to accelerator and brake pedals of the vehicle. A delay device may be provided in line 32 to prevent operation of starter 40 by excess currents of very short duration.
