Abstract

607,335. Automatic voltage control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1946, No. 3017. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] In a system for regulating the voltage of a dynamo-electric generator, electrically-operated means responsive to generator speed, but independent of the electrical condition of the generator reduce the correction necessary by the voltage regulator over the speed range of the generator. The terminal voltage of a D.C. shunt generator 1 driven by an aircraft engine 2 is maintained constant by a field rheostat 4 automatically adjusted by a control coil 3, the energization of which is dependent on the terminal voltage. Should the speed of the aircraft engine, and hence the generator speed, exceed a predetermined value, the operation of a relay 7, energized from a tachometer alternator 9 through a high-pass filter 10, inserts a resistor 12 in series with rheostat 4 to extend the range of regulation. Reverse operation of relay 7 to short-circuit resistor 12 occurs at a lower speed than forward operation to ensure positive operation of relay 7.
