555,609. Filters. VOKES, C. G. Feb. 26, 1942, No. 2533. [Class 46] In a filter comprising resilient filtering material, such as hair felt or elastic porous cellulose, a means to clean the material by squeezing action tending to eject sludge and dirty liquid on the dirty side, the material is more closely spaced or more compressed near the clean side or so arranged that pressure can be caused to become greater on the clean side. As shown, a cylindrical filter unit comprises series of felt discs 12 arranged between tapered distance pieces 11 with interposed flat distance pieces 13 around a slidable perforated tube 5, closed at the bottom by a plate 9, secured to the lower end plate 10, and engaging at the top in a guiding spigot, attached to the top plate 6, a spindle 16 being connected by a spider 17 to the tube and carried through a gland in the casing to enable the pack to be compressed by direct reciprocating action or by means of a spring 18, alternately compressed and released by rotating the spindle round a camp path 19. The distance pieces 11 may be resilient or more resilient on the clean side, or may be curved, to assist the action.
