Abstract

560,203. Filters. VOKES, C. G., STOKES, E. A., and VOKES, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1942, No. 13132. [Class 46] In a filter comprising a main filter unit 7 and a finer filter unit 14 having a common inlet. 1 and separate outlets, 2, 22, and in which filtration is-maintained in the unit 14 when the unit 7 is byepassed as by movement against a spring 12 under a predetermined back pressure, the units 7, 14 are arranged coaxially in the casing 3 and the unit 14 is adapted to be cleaned in situ. In the form shown, the units 7, 14 are separated by a partition 13 in a casing 3 secured to a header. The partition 3 rests on a bead 3a and need not be completely fluid-tight. The unit 7 comprises a deeply-pleated or star-shaped screen .and'the unit 14 is constructed as described in Specification 560,202. As .shown in Fig. 1, the unit 14 is fed through the hollow lower end of a rod 17 adapted to be turned by a tommy bar 20 for operating the cleaning knives 15. A spring-pressed ball valve 24 and a restriction 21b are provided to limit the difference between the external and internal pressure on the unit 14 when cold oil is being filtered. As shown in Fig. 2, the unit 14 is fed-from an annular space 1a in the header through a port 1b and a hollow rod 17 and is rotatable by the tommy bar 20, the knives 15 being prevented from rotating by fixed lugs 34. In other forms, the unit 14 may be arranged around, or may be exposed to fluid which has passed through, the unit 7. Specications. 396,257 and 532,256 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which, the main filter unit is arranged for inward flow and a by-pass valve is provided and constructions in which the finer filter unit surrounding the main unit consists of a pair of flanged baskets with cellulose, asbestos wool or other filtering material between them, a moulded hat-shaped element of felt or a moulded ceramic pack, the filter units being arranged in series in each case.
