Abstract

562,175. Magnetic separators. VOKES, C. G. Oct. 6, 1942, No. 14029. [Class 72] In a magnetic oil and like filter having an enclosure within which a filter unit is mounted and to the interior of which the unfiltered liquid is fed, the unit is provided with a screen and also magnetic separating means so arranged that magnetic particles collected within the unit remain enclosed under all working conditions and are removed with the unit when the latter is removed for cleaning and replacement. In another form in which the filter unit is arranged to be byepassed when the screen exerts a predetermined pressure, e.g. as in Specification 532,256, [Group I], magnetic separating means such as permanent magnets, in the form of a bolt, are so mounted within the unit that they will be byepassed with the unit, and may be movable with the unit when the latter is removed. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a filter unit is adapted to be held to the inlet passage of a filter casing by a spring and bye-passed when it exerts excessive back pressure. The star-shaped filter element 1 is retained within a perforated metal cover 2 between end plates 3, 4 by a spider 5 attached to the inlet tube 6, with a bye-pass 6a, and bolt 7 with a finger hub 8. The upper part 7a of the bolt is threaded into a long, preferably non-magnetic, nut 9 and secured thereto by a nut 10 and pin 11 and the permanent magnet in the form of a rod 12 is secured in the top of the nut 9. Two vanes 13 contact the top of the magnet and the alternate two 14 the bottom. Specifications 320,967, [Class 72], and 524,675, [Group XXVIIIIare also referred to.
