Abstract

1,150,896. Air filters; centrifugal separators. FRAM CORP. 2 Aug., 1966, No. 34641/66. Heading BIT and B2P. An air cleaner for an I.C. engine intake comprises a housing containing a centrifugal separator 20-26, a cylindrical fibrous batt filter 56 and a cylindrical, axially pleated, resinimpregnated paper filter 46 arranged in series and concentrically. Air from inlet 18 leaves an annular chamber 20 through holes (25) in its lower annular wall 23, and vanes 26 impart a rotary movement to the air (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). Vanes 26 and wall 23 may be of moulded plastics or welded metal construction. The heavy dust thereby separated is collected in a removable cup 30, whose roof is formed by a plate 62 with aperture 66. The synthetic or textile fibrous batt (composition and thickness given) is disposable and enclosed between perforate walls 54, 55, outer wall 55 being split at one point (Fig. 6, not shown) to facilitate replacement. Filters 46, 56 are respectively and independently removably supported by wing nuts 42, 43 which engage different threaded portions of bolt 41 on the end of perforate outlet tube 39. The cleaner may be vertically or horizontally oriented, and cup 30 has a peg 67 to ensure proper orientation of aperture 66 in the horizontal arrangement. The cleaner has circumferential bands with ears 15, 29 for mounting, and cup 30 is retained by toggle clamps 37, 38. The batt 56 is stated to retain fine dust which would clog the paper filter.
