555,200. Rubber compositions. ABBEY, A. (Crown Cork & Seal Co.). Dec. 30, 1941, No. 16793. Drawings to Specification. [Class 70] Rubber compositions for forming closure discs for containers or sealing compositions contain a sulphur-bearing vulcanizing compound in amount which will yield not more than .5 per cent. of sulphur which will combine with the rubber without leaving free sulphur. Suitable compounds are thiuram polysulphides, e.g. pentamethylene-thiuram-tetrasulphide or tetramethyl-thiuram-disulphide, which on decomposition give sulphur and the monosulphide. A sealing composition, which cures on drying but may be heated, consists of rubber latex, zinc oxide, barium sulphate, a dispersing agent, casein, sodium hydroxide and water, together with dipentamethylene-thiuram-tetrasulphide as vulcanizing agent and tetramethylthiuram-monosulphide as accelerator. The compositions may be mixed with granulated cork and the mixture rolled and moulded to produce rods, discs &c. In this case, a mixing of crude rubber may be used. Synthetic rubbers may be admixed, and zinc or other salicylates added as mould inhibitors.
