Abstract

Dry zinc sulphate mixed with zinc or other metal sulphide is calcined to produce a pigment which may be zinc oxide or a compound of zinc oxide with zinc sulphide or may consist of zinc oxide associated with the oxide or sulphate of the other metal. Zinc oxide is obtained by heating one molecule of zinc sulphide with three of zinc sulphate; zinc oxysulphide, ZnO.ZnS, by heating five molecules of zinc sulphide with three of zinc sulphate; a mixture of zinc oxide with titanium, or antimony oxide by heating mixtures of titanium or antimony sulphide with zinc sulphate; a mixture of zinc oxide with titanium oxide by heating a mixture of titanium and zinc sulphides with zinc sulphate; and a mixture of zinc oxide with a stable sulphate such as barium or lead sulphate by heating the corresponding sulphide with zinc sulphate.
