Abstract
A composite pigment comprises a mixture of a base pigment and silica particles, containing more than 2 per cent of silica, said composite pigment having a tinting strength at least substantially equal to that of said base pigment alone, the silica being produced by the calcination of the silicon hydroxide formed by the reaction in aqueous solution of an alkali silicofluoride with ammonia under such conditions that the hydroxide formed has the appearance of a crystalline precipitate. Titania, zinc oxide, zinc sulphide, white lead and lithopone are specified as base pigments, and amounts of silica up to 25 per cent of the composite pigment are mentioned. Silica in the desired form may be obtained by adding ammonium silicofluoride solution to an excess of aqueous ammonia, over a considerable range of temperatures, but if the ammonia is added to the silicofluoride solution, so that an excess of ammonia is not present until the end of the reaction, the temperature must be kept below 34 DEG C. to avoid the formation of a gelatinous hydroxide. In each case the precipitate is washed, dried and calcined, and the silica so formed has a comparatively high tinting strength and oil absorption, is soft in texture, and its particles are usually of less than 0,5 micron in diameter. The base pigment and the silicon hydroxide may be coprecipitated, the silicon hydroxides may be precipitated on to particles of the base pigment, or the base pigment may be precipitated on to particles of the silica. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 456,058.
