Abstract

Zinc oxide or hydrated zinc oxide for use as a pigment is obtained by adding to a zinc lye, for instance, zinc chloride solution, so much alkali hydroxide as will produce in the liquid above the precipitate a pH value of 12-12,8. The precipitate is washed and dried below red heat, for instance, at 100 DEG C. An alkaline-earth hydroxide may alternatively be used as the precipitant, this being added in less than the equivalent amount. The necessary pH value of the liquid above the filtered and washed precipitate is then obtained by the addition of alkali hydroxide. The pigment, which has an average particle size of 0,7-1 micron, gives a yellowish luminescence in ultra-violet light.
