Abstract
Alkaline earth or earth metal silicates are produced by mixing dilute alkali metal silicate and alkaline earth or earth metal salt solutions, characterized in that they are mixed rapidly and homogeneously, that the desired interaction is complete within one second and that the reaction product is removed rapidly from the reaction zone before particle growth of healing of the lattice structure is initiated. Concentrations of solutions are selected such that the reaction mixture leaving the reaction zone contains 30-70 grms./litre of desired silicate and reaction is conducted at temperatures above 50 DEG C. They are used as fillers for rubber, &c. Example 2, use of silicates containing silicic acid is given by way of comparison.ALSO:An alkaline earth or earth metal silicate, produced by precipitation from a dilute alkali metal silicate and alkaline earth or earth metal salt solutions mixed under such conditions that precipitation is completed within one second, is used as a filler for natural rubbers and other elastomers. Vulcanizates filled with 40 parts by weight of silicate to 100 parts by weight of rubber have tensile strengths of at least 240 mgs/cm2.
