Abstract
553,948. Drainages ; valves. BROAD & CO., Ltd., and MAJOR, J. Sept. 1, 1941, No. 11168. [Class 33] [Also in Group XXIX] An anti-flood mechanism for manholes comprises a valve mounted on a back plate or frame, for attachment to the side wall of a manhole receiving a sewer and provided with two downwardly extending legs or prongs straddling a channel in the bottom of the manhole and adapted to be embedded in the brickwork on opposite sides of the channel. The back plate 4 is provided with the downwardly extending legs or prongs 10 and is secured to the side 3 of the manhole into which the sewer 2 discharges by rag bolts 9 which are passed through a hole 8 and holes in lateral lugs 7. A semi-circular portion 5 the radius of which corresponds with the radius of the sewer 2 is cut in the bottom portion of the plate 4. A flap 11 having a semi-circular extension 12 of slightly smaller diameter than the channel 1 is provided with lugs 15 between which is secured a link 16 which is in turn pivotedly mounted between lugs 6 mounted on the back-plate 4. Just below the centre of curvature 18 of extension 12 is provided a stud 19 on which is mounted a semi-circular rubber or other packing 20 to take up the difference between the part 12 and the channel 1, the packing being secured in position by a plate 21 held in position by a wing nut 22 on the stud 19.
