Abstract

553,450. Aircraft launching and alighting. SHORT BROS., (ROCHESTER & BEDFORD), Ltd., and SMITH, L. Feb. 11, 1942, Nos. 1873 and 11405. [Class 4] Wing floats for flying boats are provided with a hydrofoil which is adapted to be lowered from a recess in the float to an operative position below the float. According to Fig. 1, the hydrofoil C is carried by links D, D' pivoted at D<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>3</SP> in the float A and can be lowered from a recess A<SP>1</SP> in which it leaves the streamline form of the float unbroken, to the operative position shown, by an electromotor g and worm gearing G<SP>1</SP>. The lengths of the links and the position of the pivots D<SP>2</SP>, D3 are chosen to determine the desired operative angle of the hydrofoil. The distance of the hydrofoil in the operative position from the bottom of the float at about the length of its chord and from the nose of the float about three-fifths of the length of the float. The float bottom and the be operated by screwed-shafts Dt, Dt engaged oy pinion nuts Dt<SP>1</SP> Dtt driven by chains Dtt. The number of the teeth on the front pinions may differ from those on the rear pinions or the pitch of the screwthread of the front pinion and shaft may differ from that of the rear pinion and shaft whereby the leading edge of the hydrofoil is lowered to a greater or less extent than the rear edge, the angle of attack of the hydrofoil being thus determined. According to Fig. 9 the hydrofoil comprises hinged section C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> and the screwed-shafts Dt, Dt are inclined whereby the di-hedral angle is increased as the hydrofoil is lowered. Specification 22407/11, [Class 4], is referred to. According to the second Provisional Specification two hydrofoils in tandem may be arranged beneath each float.
