Abstract

553,148. Hasp fastenings. HARKER & CO., Ltd., J. W. HAWKINS, L. W., and PEAGAM, B. J. May 28, 1942, No. 7269. [Class 44] A toggle-action fastening for container lids comprises plates 1, 4 secured respectively to the container lid 2 and body 3, plate 4 having a curled upper edge to provide a hook-like lip 4a, and plate 1 having a turned-over edge 1a to form a pivot bearing for a cross-bar 5 from the ends of which arms 6 extend substantially at right-angles. The ends of arms 6 are pivotally engaged in loops 7 formed in the sides 8a of a substantially rectangular frame whilst the sides 8b, 8c are respectively adapted to engage under lip 4a and formed to provide an operating handle 9. To secure the lid the handle 9 is swung downwards and the part 8b engaged under lip 4a, further depression of the handle towards the container body 3 tightening the fastening with toggle action. The arms 6 may be bowed so as to be under tension when in fastened position. Plates 1, 4 are shown secured by screws, but may be otherwise secured as by bolts or rivets, or, if the container be of metal, may be integral with the box parts or welded thereto.
