Abstract

616,780. Hinges. ILLINGWORTH & CO., Ltd., E., and WHITE, I. E. Jan. 31, 1947, No. 2966. [Class 65 (ii)] A hinge, particularly for the lid of a box, comprises a member with resilient jaws and a member with a non-circular part fitting between the jaws and arranged to force them apart during its rotation. In the form shown a spring steel plate 1 is divided by cuts into a number of tongues, of which alternate ones are bent as at 3 to receive a bar-like portion 16 on another plate 12; the other tongues, such as 4, of the plate 1 bear on the bar 16, which is arranged at an angle to the plate 12 so that it lies against one side of the socket portions 3 when the hinge plates are in line and against the other side when the plates are at right angles, the movement from either position to the other being at first resisted and then completed by the pressure of the tongues 4. The tongues 3 pass through apertures in the plate 12 and may be shouldered to limit the opening of the hinge. Both plates are formed with prongs 11 to fix them in slots in the box and lid, which are preferably of thermoplastic material which shrinks on the hinge plates on cooling. The hinge plates may alternatively be riveted, welded, or soldered to metal container parts. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 5695/40, as open to inspection under Sect. 91.
