[Class 44] [Also in Groups XXVIII, XVII and XXXVI] A coupling for containers and lids, hoses &c. or for electrical apparatus or cables, comprises a bulb-shaped annular or like projection or flange 3 on one part adapted to enter elastically a corresponding groove on the other part, the plane of the opening 4 of the groove being positioned at right angles to the directions of engaging and disengaging, and a solid insert 8 being provided to prevent distortion. The parts may be so shaped that, during the closing movement, contact is first made along the inner side of the annular projection and groove. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a container 1 and its cover 2. Fig. 2 shows the application to an electric coupling for connecting cables 14, 18 by means of contacts 12, 15, insulating inserts 10, 17 preventing distortion. In another form of electric coupling with six contact pins, the engaging projection and groove are of oval form. There may be two or more co-operating projections and grooves arranged in series, and if desired coaxially disposed. Valves may be provided for the escape of air from the inside of the coupling.
