552,439. Preventing ice formation on aircraft. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and FIELD, E.F. Oct. 4, 1941, No. 12835. [Class 4] For preventing ice formation on aircraft wings, de-icing liquid is supplied to the leading edge through strips of absorbent material having faces secured together over a narrow width relative to the width of the strips to form. a channel for the liquid, the external surfaces of the strips being sealed against the liquid so as to confine the outward flow of the latter to the unsealed edges of the strips. which are flush with the edges of a slot in the leading edge. Fig. 3 shows two strips 1, 2 superposed by folding a single strip of canvas or other textile material and stitching it to form a channel 4 at the fold. The outer surfaces and the fold of the strip are covered with rubber 6 and the exposed edges 7 of the strips 1, 2 and flush with the edges of a slot 10 formed in the rigid covering 8 at the leading edge of a wing. Rubber nipples for supplying liquid such as ethylene glycol may be formed in the rubber covering 6 opposite the channel 4 which is shown parallel to the edges of the strip, but channels may be formed radiating from each nipple. The channels may be formed by interweaving instead of stitching. The ends of the strips are sealed against escape of liquid.
