Abstract

523,880. Preventing ice-formation on aircraft. SHAW, G. R. and ROWE, M. F. PRING-. March 8, 1939. No. 7519. [Class 4] To prevent the formation of ice on aircraft wings a shoe is secured to the leading edge and comprises layers 1-4 of permeable but inextensible material stitched near two edges 5 to form a flat tubular chamber 6 for de-icing fluid, the innermost layer 1 being cemented to an extensible waterproof material 7 and the outermost and narrowest layer 4 being covered by waterproof material 8 and a wire gauze strip 9 cemented at its edges to two additional extensible and waterproof strips 10 secured to the strip 7 and to the wing. The layers 1-4 may be of fabric. The de-icing fluid is supplied to the chamber 6 under pressure and expands it and the fluid seeps out at the edges through the gauze 9. Two or more such chambers may be provided at the leading edge and supplies with de-icing fluid simultaneously or alternately.
