Abstract
518,180. Preventing ice formation. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Aug. 16, 1938, No. 24181. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1937. [Class 4] Extensible shoes mounted on a surface to prevent accumulation of ice thereon are locally strengthened by spaced extensible strips so as to confine possible tearing to the areas between the strips. The shoes, which are of the kind comprising intermittently inflatable tubes as disclosed for example in U.S.A. Specification 1,998,809 are described applied around the leadng edges of the wings, fin and tail plane of an aeroplane. Normally' flat tubes 25, 26 of biascut fabric coated with rubber are enclosed between rubber sheets 23, 27 filling strips 33 preventing abrupt changes of contour. A series of longitudinally extensible strips 34 with turned over edges are rubber impregnated and cemented between the tubes 25, 26 and the sheet 27. The edges of the sheets 23, 27 are cemented to inextensible fabric 32 overlapping the strips 34. Filling strips 35 are provided at the edges of each strip. The shoe is stretched over the leading edge of the wing &c. and is secured by screws passed through metal fairing strips 31. The ends of the covers are cemented to extensible strips which may be shaped to support the ends of the tubes 25, 26.
