Description

Dec. 3, 1935. .1. RA'TH DRESS SHIELD Filed Jan. 24, 1954 [nya/Mor.' JsL-:F HTH y cf. @ma i @and /To ME y Patented Dec. 3, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Friedlaender, Gummi Berlin, Germany Waren-Fabrik, G. m. b. H.,
Application January 24, 1934, Serial No. 708,058 In Germany October 28, 1932 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in dress shields, and more particularly in dress shields comprising a flap of moisture repelling material such as india rubber and protective flaps of fabric 5 or the like covering the said moisture repelling flap at both sides. In dress shields of this type such as are now in use the perspiration passes from the outer fabric to the inner fabric notwithstanding the iiap of rubber separating the said fabrics, and it has heretofore been assumed that the transmission of the moisture takes place through the rubber, and that the said rubber has not suiiicient repelling property. I have found that the transmission of the moisture from the outer fabric to the inner one takes place at the margins of the shield, and that it is caused by the fabrics being in contact with each other or separated from each other by material which has no moisture repelling property, such as the usual ribbon sewn to the edge of the shield. The object of the improvements is to provide a shield in which the transmission of moisture from the outer fabric placed on the skin of the person to the inner fabric placed on the garment is prevented, and with this object in View my invention consists in providing moisture repelling ma; terial at the margin of the shield.
For the purpose of explaining the invention several examples embodying the same have been 30 shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same letters of reference have 'been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawing,
Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the shield, a part of the marginal ribbon being removed,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional elevation on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary elevations showing modifications, parts of the ribbon and flaps being removed.
In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the dress shield comprises a flap of rubber a covered at its outer and inner sides by flaps of fabrics b and c, the said flaps being united at their margins by a ribbon e. At their margins d the flaps b and c must be separated from each other, and therefore they do not project beyond the fiap a, or as shown, the flap of rubber a slightly projects beyond the margins of the fabric b and c, and the ribbon e consists of moisture repelling material 5 such as rubber. Thus the fabrics b and c are separated from each other by moisture repelling material, viz. the margin of the flap a, of rubber and the ribbon e. I have found that thereby the transmission of moisture `from the outer i0 fabric b, which absorbs the moisture from the skin of the person, to the inner fabric c is prevented, and that thereby the garment is protected from the perspiration.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in which 15 the flap of rubber a3 is covered at either side by fabrics b3 and c3 which are impregnated along their margins with a material imparting thereto moisture repelling property, .a suitable impregnating material being paraffin. In the figure the 20 impregnated portions f have been indicated by dots. The shield is edged by a ribbon e3 sewn thereto which need not be waterproof.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification in which the flap a4 of rubber is covered at either side by 25 flaps of fabric b4 and c4. The fabric b4 located at the outer side of the shield is adapted to absorb the perspiration from the skin, andthe whole flap c4 located at the inner side of the shield consists of a moisture repelling material, for eX- ample of a suitable fabric impregnated with parain. In the figure the moisture repelling fabric c4 has been indicated by dots. Preferably the fabric c4 is impregnated by immersing the same into molten paraiiin. The shield is edged by a ribbon e4.
I claim:
A dress shield, comprising a flap of moisture repelling material, flaps of fabric covering the same on both sides, and an edging ribbon of 40 moisture repelling material, said flap of moisture repelling material projecting beyond the margins of the flaps of fabric and engaging the edging ribbon.
