Abstract

552,111. Crucible furnaces. HORNSBY, H. July 7, 1942, No. 9433. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a crucible furnace air for combustion is supplied from a jacket 12 through openings 13 adjacent the lower part of the fuel bed 8. The furnace is mounted in a pit 14 and may be fixed as shown, or supported on trunnions and tilted about an axis. The top of the pit is closed by plates 16 with the exception of an annular gap 17 around the furnace through which air passes into the pit and is forced by a blower A into the jacket 12. The bottom 5 of the furnace is removable and carries a container 6 for sand 7 on which rests the fuel bed.
