Abstract

551,077. Screw conveyers. CROUCHER, K. S. M., and CROWDER, J. H. Feb. 18, 1942, No. 2176. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups XII and XXIV] Fuel from a hopper 25a, Fig. 1, is fed by a screw conveyer 26 to the upper part of a chamber 20 which is separated by a partition 54, Fig. 4, from the lower part to which gases from the furnace space are supplied by a blower and pipe 19 to blow the fuel through the nozzle 53 into the furnace. The conveyer is driven by pawl and ratchet gearing comprising a ratchet wheel 35, Figs. 1 and 5, and pawl 39 mounted on a carrier 33 oscillated by a rod 32 driven through gearing by an electric motor 16. The effective stroke of the pawl is varied by an adjustable mask 43 carried by an arm 44 secured to a disc 45 mounted on a flange 38a of a bearing 38 for a hollow shaft 36 on which the ratchet wheel is mounted. A yielding ball clutch comprising members 40, 41 and balls 40a pressed by springs 42 is interposed between the hollow shaft 36 and shaft 34 coupled to the conveyer shaft and is adapted to yield in'the event of any obstruction jamming the conveyer.
