Abstract
550,110. Altering physical or molecular structure. NORTHERN ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., and HOWITT, F. June 19, 1941, No. 7758. [Class 83 (iv)] Aluminium or magnesium alloy stock is prepared for forging by initially working it at a temperature well below the forging range to such an extent that the grain size, after increasing, has begun to decrease. The temperature is preferably ordinary room temperature and, after working, the stock is rapidly heated to forging temperature, e.g. in a nitrate, molten metal or oil bath, or in rapidly circulated hot air. For an aluminium alloy piston, the billet may be hammered at room temperature to reduce its length 50 per cent or more, heated to 400‹ C.- 450‹ C., and forged. The forging may then be rapidly reheated, e.g. to 490‹. C.-520‹ C., and soaked at this temperature or at a lower one. Instead of hammering, the working may be effected by rolling, drawing, extrusion, &c.
