[Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii)] In a boiler having a separately-fired superheater 21 through which steam is taken to a supply line 35, to prevent overheating of the superheater tubes by the boiler furnace when the boiler is supplying saturated steam to a separate line 26 and the superheater furance 14 is not being fired, a small quantity of saturated steam is allowed to flow through the superheater to the outlet header 23 and back to the steam line 26 through a pipe 29 containing a non-return valve 31 and a hand-operated stop valve 32. An orifice plate 25 at the entrance to the line 26 creates a pressure in the line below that in the drum to ensure a flow of saturated steam through the superheater.
